The Ely postcard, reinvented as a tiny game

Ely is one of England's smallest cities, but its cathedral rises out of the flat Fens so dramatically that it's known as the Ship of the Fens. You'll see it for miles, which is handy if you get lost cycling.

It’s a link, so it works on any device, anywhere, with no download. Choose a game style and a look (the Postcard look has chip-thieving seagulls and runaway suitcases), type “Ely”, write a line about Ely Cathedral or eels, which may have given the city its name, and it’s ready to send before your tea goes cold.

Who sends a postcard from Ely?

Cyclists and walkers in the Fens

Flat roads, big skies and the cathedral guiding you in from miles away. Send a postcard to the friends who think cycling means hills.

Couples on a weekend away

A riverside lunch, a stroll up to the cathedral and tea somewhere cosy. Send a postcard that's as gentle as the weekend.

Grandparents on a coach trip

A cathedral tour, Oliver Cromwell's House and a slice of cake by the river. Send the grandkids a game starring you, they'll love it.

3 ideas for an Ely postcard game

Idea 1

Fenland Flap

Icicles and snowmen suit the cold, windy Fens, where one tap flying feels like cycling into a headwind.

Put this in

“The Fens are flat, so the wind has nothing to slow it down.”

Idea 2

Grandad's Big Day Out

Retirement's alarm clocks and emails make cheerful baddies for a gentle day trip with no work in sight.

Put this in

“No emails today. Only cathedrals, cake and a long nap on the coach.”

Idea 3

Christmas in the Fens

Christmas elves, presents and mince pies suit a small cathedral city that glows in December.

Put this in

“Climbed higher than anything in the Fens. Admittedly, that's not hard.”

What to write on an Ely postcard

  • Name-drop a landmark. “Wish you were here at Oliver Cromwell's House” works because it’s specific.
  • Mention what Ely is known for: eels, which may have given the city its name, or Ely Cathedral, known as the Ship of the Fens. One specific detail beats “lovely views” every time.
  • Keep the ending message short: one detail, one feeling, one sign-off. It reads better on a phone screen.

Ending messages to steal

  • “Saw the Ship of the Fens from miles away. Even more amazing up close. Wish you were here!”
  • “Lovely day in Ely: cathedral, cake, river walk. Grandad fell asleep on the coach home.”
  • “Cycled across the Fens, legs fine, face windswept. Ely was worth every mile.”

Landmarks to name-drop

  • Ely Cathedral
  • Oliver Cromwell's House
  • Ely Riverside
  • Ely Museum

The game shows the place name and your message, not these landmarks: the Postcard look’s far-off silhouettes are generic. Your words do the sightseeing.

How to send it, step by step

  1. Pick the Postcard occasion. Open become.games and choose Postcard. You can try it free with our demo characters straight away, no sign-up needed. To send it, you put your own people in it (drawn from a photo, which needs a plan); publishing and the link are free.
  2. Choose a game style and a look. Any style and any look work. The Postcard look (pastel houses, bunting, chip-thieving seagulls and runaway suitcases) is the natural pick, and for Ely we’d also try flappy flyer with the Winter look.
  3. Type “Ely” as where it’s from. The “Where’s it from?” field takes up to 24 characters. Your game is titled “Greetings from Ely”; rename it if you like, e.g. “Fenland Flap”.
  4. Make the jokes yours. The pre-written lines are postcard and holiday flavoured. Swap one for something only Ely would explain, like a line about Ely Riverside.
  5. Write the message on the back and send it. The ending is a postcard flying in with the place in big retro letters, your message on the back, a stamp and your signature. Publish it (free, with its own permanent link) and share it on WhatsApp, as a QR code or by copying the link. It plays in the browser on any device.

Ely postcard: questions

Will the game show Ely Cathedral?

No. The game is titled “Greetings from Ely” and ends with a postcard showing the place name in big retro letters and your message, but it doesn’t draw Ely Cathedral. The Postcard look has far-off landmark silhouettes, but they’re generic, not Ely’s. That’s what your jokes and message are for: mention Ely Cathedral in a line and they’ll picture it.

What should I write on a postcard from Ely?

Keep it short and specific: one place, one moment, one sign-off. For example: “Saw the Ship of the Fens from miles away. Even more amazing up close. Wish you were here!”

Can I put myself in an Ely postcard?

Yes. Build and try it free with demo characters, then upload a photo to turn yourself (and whoever you’re with) into cartoon characters, which needs a plan. Everyone in the photo must agree, and the photo is deleted once the characters are made.

How much does a digital postcard game cost?

Making, playing and publishing it is free, and every published game gets its own permanent link. To turn your own photos into cartoon characters, or to give the game a custom link like yourname.become.games, you need a plan: £3.49 a month or £19.99 a year. Cancel any time.
